Decisions on general reimbursement for medicinal products

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority makes decisions in a number of cases concerning application for general reimbursement for medicinal products.

The decisions are made based on section 144 of the Danish Health Act (in Danish only) and executive order no. 180 of 17 March 2005 on reimbursement (in Danish only).

Prescription-only medicinal product

General reimbursement

Companies can apply to the Danish Health and Medicines Authority for the granting of general reimbursement in respect of a prescription-only medicinal product they bring onto the Danish market.

If the medicinal product is eligible for general reimbursement, it means that the Danish regions offer reimbursement when it is bought on prescription at a pharmacy.

General conditional reimbursement

Some medicines carry conditional reimbursement, which means that reimbursement is conditional on the medicine being prescribed for the treatment of certain diseases or for certain patient groups (this is called general conditional reimbursement). The doctor must write the Danish word "tilskud" (reimbursement) on the prescription.

Guiding criteria for single reimbursement

The Danish Health and Medicines Authority has established guiding criteria for the granting of single reimbursement in respect of medicines that are not eligible for general reimbursement.

Over-the-counter medicines

In respect of over-the-counter medicines, reimbursement is subject to the medicinal product being prescribed for the treatment of specific diseases or patient groups determined by the Danish Health and Medicines Authority (general conditional reimbursement) or for persons receiving pension benefits under the Danish Social Pension Act or the Danish Highest, Intermediate, Increased Ordinary and Ordinary Early Retirement, etc. Act.

The list below provides an overview of the decisions made by the Danish Health and Medicines Authority in response to general reimbursement applications in which the DHMA has requested a recommendation from the Reimbursement Committee. It also contains decisions of an otherwise principle nature.
