In addition to the intended effect, most medicines have common or rare and more or less serious side effects.

The Danish Medicines Agency continuously weighs the side effects of medicines against the intended effect. The more serious an illness the medicine is used to treat, the more serious side effects are accepted.

Pharmaceutical companies and doctors must report any discovered side effects to the Danish Medicines Agency. Patients and relatives can also report side effects. The Danish Medicines Agency uses the reports to weigh the side effects of the medicine against the effect.

Particularly when buying medicines on the internet, there is a risk of buying counterfeit medicines. This means that the medicine may be either ineffective or have unforeseen side effects.
