  • Heat wave: Retailers may refrain from selling non-prescription drugs

    Due to the summer heat, the Danish Medicines Agency has given Danish retailers dispensation from the requirement to stock a basic selection of medicines if they are having trouble keeping the temperature in their store cool enough for proper storage of the drugs. This dispensation applies until 1 September.

  • Self-selection of OTC medicines for human use

    On 1 January 2018, new rules on self-selection of OTC medicines become effective. With the change in law, certain OTC medicines will be available for self-selection, which means that they can be sold from shop areas and not only at the counter.

    The Danish Health and Medicines Authority warns against taking the weight-loss products "Slimex 15" and "Slimex 15 New Formula" that are sold on the internet. The weight-loss products contain sibutramine that may cause serious side effects.

  • New rules for persons collaborating with the industry

    As of 1 November 2014, new rules governing healthcare professionals' collaboration with pharmaceutical and medical companies take effect. The rules governing association will be extended to include medical companies and nurses. Doctors' association with speciality stores trading in medical devices are also covered by the rules.

  • Consultation procedure about medicinal products and safety measure requirements not completed yet

    On 5 September 2014, the Danish Health and Medicines Authority submitted a draft list of the medicinal products comprised by the new safety measures rules (Directive 2001/83) for consultation. The consultation period expired on 17 September 2014, and on 3 October we were to inform the European Commission of the medicinal products we recommend including in the common EU lists. We have received 22 consultation responses. But on 24 September 2014 the European Commission amended the original guideline for how to interpret the criteria used to assess whether a medicinal product is qualified for the white list.

  • More than 10,000 websites shut down in global operation

    The recent global Operation PANGEA VII resulted in the shutdown of more than 10,000 websites. The operation focused on combating online sale of counterfeit medicines and making consumers aware that they need to take care of themselves when buying medicines online. Globally, the operation led to 237 arrests, some 540,000 parcels were inspected and over 9.4 million units containing potentially life-threatening medicines were seized – worth an estimated value of more than USD 35 million. More than 10,000 websites were shut down or had their payment facility removed.

  • Reimbursement of medicines bought in another EU/EEA country

    From 1 January 2014, you can obtain reimbursement of prescription-only medicines bought in another EU/EEA country under the general reimbursement rules of the Danish Health Act. You have to be covered by the national health insurance in Denmark and have a health insurance card (the yellow card) and the medicine must be reimbursable in Denmark.
