Applying as a pharmacist qualified in the EU/EEA or Switzerland

EU/EEA or Swiss nationals who have completed training as a pharmacist in either of these countries and who meet the EU minimum requirements, cf. directive, are covered by Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 7 September 2005 on the recognition of professional qualifications.

If you are a pharmacist, you can use the European Professional Card (EPC), an electronic procedure, to have your professional qualifications recognised in other EU countries.

If you want to work at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy, you need permission from the Danish Medicines Agency.

Would you like to apply for permission to take long-term or temporary employment as a pharmacist at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy.

The following documents must be submitted with the application to apply for permission to work as a pharmacist at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy.

1) A certified copy of documentation of name, nationality and date of birth (e.g. in the form of copies of the relevant pages of your passport).

2a) A certified copy of the original diploma mentioned in Annex V, point 5.6.2 “Evidence of formal qualifications of pharmacists” of Directive 2005/36/EC, and accompanied, where relevant, by a certificate.

2b) If your diploma does not correspond to the titles specified for the country of training in Annex V, point 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC, your diploma must be accompanied by a certified copy of a certificate issued by the competent authority of the country of training, stating that your diploma in pharmacy has been issued for the successful completion of training in accordance with the provisions of Directive 2005/36/EC and that your qualifications are treated equally with the training specified in the Directive.

2c) If your diploma was issued before the reference date mentioned in Annex V, point 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC, and your diploma concerns a training course which was started before this date, you must enclose with your diploma a certified copy of a certificate, stating that you have been effectively and lawfully engaged in the activities of a pharmacist in the EU/EEA or Switzerland for at least three consecutive years during the five years preceding the award of the certificate.

3) If you have changed your name after you were awarded your diploma, you must enclose a certified copy of your marriage certificate or a change of name certificate.

Certified true copies means that all copies of the original documents must be certified by either an embassy/consulate, the police, an authority (e.g. job centre) notary public or the authority having issued the document by adding its stamp and signature on each copy to certify that the copy is a true copy of the original document. Private persons cannot certify copies.

If you want to work as a pharmacist on a temporary or occasional basis at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy, you can inform the Danish Medicines Agency thereof in advance in a written declaration. We will assess the temporary or occasional nature of employment, in particular in relation to its duration, its frequency, its regularity and its continuity.

If you want to keep working on a temporary or occasional basis, you must renew this declaration once a year. Your renewal declaration must be submitted to the Danish Medicines Agency. If any of the previously submitted documents have changed, cf. items 1-7, this must be indicated in your renewal declaration.

If you have qualified as a pharmacist outside Denmark and you work on a temporary or occasional basis as a pharmacist at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy, you must inform the pharmacy’s customers of the professional title that is used in the country of training. One way is to indicate your title on your name badge. The title must be in one of the official languages of the country of training to avoid confusion with the Danish title used for a pharmacist. If the academic title from the country of training can be confused with a title which in Denmark requires additional qualifications that you have not obtained, the Danish Medicines Agency may require you to use your academic title in an appropriate format specified by the Danish Medicines Agency.

The following documents must be submitted with the declaration:

1. A certified copy of documentation of name, nationality and date of birth (e.g. in the form of copies of the relevant pages of your passport).

2. A certified copy of the original diploma mentioned in Annex V, point 5.6.2. “Evidence of formal qualifications of pharmacists” of Directive 2005/36/EC, and accompanied, where relevant, by a certificate, as well as proof that the person concerned is not prohibited from practising this service at the time when the diploma was issued/attestation delivered.

3. If you have changed your name after you were awarded your diploma, you must enclose a certified copy of your marriage certificate or a change of name certificate.

4. If a Danish authority or educational establishment has previously assessed your training as a pharmacist and your qualifications, you must enclose copies of any such assessments.

5. If the conditions of items 1 and 2 above are met, the Danish Medicines Agency can assess the declaration immediately. If the conditions are not met, you must meet one or more conditions of the items below.

6. If your diploma does not correspond to the titles specified for the country of training in Annex V, point 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC, your diploma must be accompanied by a certified copy of a certificate issued by the competent authority of the country of training, certifying that your diploma in pharmacy has been issued for the successful completion of training in accordance with the provisions of Directive 2005/36/EC and that your qualifications are treated equally with the training specified in the Directive.

7. If your diploma was issued before the reference date mentioned in Annex V, point 5.6.2 of Directive 2005/36/EC, and your diploma concerns a training course which was started before this date, you must enclose with your diploma a certified copy of a certificate, stating that you have been effectively and lawfully engaged in the activities of a pharmacist in the EU/EEA or Switzerland for at least three consecutive years during the five years preceding the award of the certificate.

Nationals of Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden who have been legally authorised by a competent authority in either of these countries to work as a pharmacist at a community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy are, in addition to the rules governing EU/EEA pharmacists etc. described in chapter 2, also covered by a Nordic agreement of 14 June 1993 between Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden on a common Nordic labour market for certain personnel groups within the healthcare service and the veterinary service, cf. executive order no. 81 of 8 September 1994, as amended.

The following documents must be submitted with the application to apply for permission to work as a pharmacist at a Danish community pharmacy or hospital pharmacy.

  1. A certified copy of documentation of name, nationality and date of birth (e.g. in the form of copies of the relevant pages of your passport).
  2. A certified copy of the diploma mentioned in Annex V, point 5.6.2. “Evidence of formal qualifications of pharmacists” of Directive 2005/36/EC.
  3. A certified copy of certificate issued by the competent authority in Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden. The copy certifies that you have the right to pursue the professional activities of a pharmacist at a pharmacy in the issuing country (Certificate of Good Standing). The certificate must not be more than three months old on the date of submission. If you are in possession of a Nordic authorisation, you must submit that instead.
  4. If you have changed your name after you were awarded your diploma, you must enclose a certified copy of your marriage certificate or a change of name certificate.
